Today I am going to tell you all a story, a story taken from my life, a story which made me stronger and determined, a story which taught me to put forward my best even during a storm, a story which only became possible because of my Mother.

I was about 8 years old and I was one of those kids who enrolled her name in every single keyboard competition, she came to know about and every single aunty ji wanted me to play for them. Cause a girl tinier than her mega sized keyboard playing classics and indie songs is something everyone wants see and hear, simply for its lovableness.

So when a talent competition was organised by my school, I immediately enrolled my name and started practicing day and night. I managed to impress everyone at my house with an excellent instrumental version of my country’s National Anthem.

It was Sunday, four days to go for the competition and my dad treated me for all my hard work by booking tickets for a film. As we were about to leave for the film, I had this wild desire inside me all of a sudden to cross the road on my own ( since, our car was parked on the other side of the road.). I freed my hand from my mother’s grip and ran like a monkey on its way to glory…. and CRASH. I was hit by a bike and was laying flat on the ground the next second. I remember my mother running towards me, gently scooping me from the ground. I cried out so loud that the entire street came to know about my accident. I saw my mother and realized she looked more hurt than me. She kept telling me, ”It’s okay.. It’s okay..” in her soothing voice…

Two days passed and I had severe bruises and scratches. Both my knees were scrapped and my left eye looked like what you would see in Tom and Jerry when either one of them punched the other in the eye.. But surprisingly, it didn’t pain much. I was still able to walk and pester my mother.

The day before the competition, I felt really nervous. Not because I wasn’t ready ( I was way too prepared. ) , but because people might laugh seeing me all bruised and scratched. So, I went to my mom and told her I didn’t want to go, cause I didn’t know the song well enough ( yikes! A lie, that too a stupid one. ). My mom gave me a surprising look. It was quite obvious I knew the song inside out. Then she gently touched my cheeks and said, ” Never in your life, let other’s opinion bring you down. It doesn’t matter how you look on the outside. It’s all in your passion and desire that resides in your heart.

People will always look on the outside first, but it is your duty to show them what you are made up of… Always try, but never quit. You might or might not win this time, but that doesn’t matter. What matters is your willpower…

These words, they latched on to me ever since.

A picture of 8-year-old me at the competition ! *Ouch*

I participated in the competition the next day and I got a standing ovation from my Principal! I keep thinking if all these beautiful memories would have been possible if it weren’t for my mom’s words. Whenever I feel down or feel like quitting, I think of these words, the strong message which they hold.

My mother still continues to push me forward in life and believes in me , even when I am unsure of my abilities. Her words keep making me want to be more determined in life.

I don’t know if I am ahead in the race of life, but I do know that I have every ounce of determination inside me, thanks to my mom. My life has taken a whole new twist since that day. I have been more passionate and strong-headed. I make sure I ‘DO’ stuff rather than thinking whether I will win or lose. I don’t care if people assume things about me. I don’t care if people talk behind my back. I don’t care if people try to put me down. I only want to be better than the person I was yesterday. I keep moving ahead, along with my Mother.

I hope this little story of mine reminded you, of your own cute little memories with your mother!

Take care,
